Tips Before Buying Your Next Leather Jacket

Buying a quality leather jacket is harder than it seems. There is nothing more irritating than spending your money on an expensive jacket, to have it fall apart a year later.

When you're window shopping for the perfect leather jacket, you want it to fit perfectly, look stylish, and last for years. A custom made leather jacket is the way to go; tailor-made just for you. But before you dish out the money, do your best to make sure you'll be getting the ultra-luxurious and flawlessly crafted, custom made leather jacket you ordered.

If you're not a leather connoisseur, you're not alone. And buying a high quality custom leather jacket can be a pretty big investment. What kind of leathers are out there and how do you know you are getting good quality?

Here are some tips to keep in mind before buying your next a leather jacket:

Have it custom made: A custom made leather jacket will fit perfectly and comfortably. If you have your leather jacket custom made, you won't have the worries that come with buying straight off the rack; like the sleeves being too long or too short, or the the shoulder span area is too snug. How many times have you tried on clothes and said,”This would fit perfect if...”. You can have your jacket customized without burning a hole in your pocket: $60. Full figures, tall frames, long arms, short waists, any size, Shoreline Traders will customize your leather jacket for $60.

Know the leather: Make sure you know the quality of the leather. Generally the softer the leather feels, the higher the price tag. It's important to know about the grade of the leather, the raw material used, and even the lining can be a helpful indicator. When you're ordering online, ask for a swatch of the leather. You'll get an idea of the color, grain, craftsmanship, and be able to feel the texture.

  • Full Grain (grade 1- highest quality) Cowhide Leather wears very well. It is the kind of leather that quickly becomes a “second skin”. Full grain ages gracefully over time and develops a beautiful natural patina with wear. It’s the ultimate in riding grade leather.
  • Lambskin is perfect for dress wear. It’s lighter, smoother and comes in a wider variety of dyed colors. Lambskin is top quality in durability and style.
  • The interior is a place for close inspection too. A well made leather piece will be fully lined through the sleeves and pockets. Some will offer a zip out lining for all weather wear. Check seams, they should match all around the garment and should be double stitched for durability. Leather on either side of a zipper indicates a well made piece.

Quality Craftsmanship: Construction is as important the quality of the leather. You can tell right away if a jacket or coat is of good quality construction by looking at the panels of leather that make the garment. Do the grains match? Is the color uniform all around? Do the pockets and zipper cover blend with the body of the coat?Adding quality leather to your wardrobe and accessories adds confidence and style to your look.

Who’s your favorite leather jacket wearing icon? Here are 5 Moments in leather fashion you do not want to forget about.

The leather jacket is an iconic piece of apparel that is associated with many celebrity bad boys and tough girls.  Not only is a leather jacket a piece of clothing, but a part of our cultures history. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and visit some of our favorite and most famous leather jacket memories.

A leather jacket is known as a symbol of courage, rebelliousness, intimidation, and masculinity. Where does this  from?

Well, the leather jacket has quite an impressive story. Leather is a material known for its durability, functionality, and protective qualities. In fact, leather jackets have a history of providing protection to military aviators, cycle messengers and motorcyclists. Notably, World War II pilots wore the A-2 leather flight jacket to protect them from cold and brutal temperatures.

This leads us to our first stop on leather jacket memory lane.

1. Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart, the daring and iconic female pilot of the early twentieth century. Not only was she a courageous pilot, but she was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, Amelia Earhart remains as an iconic fashion figure in the fashion industry- Popularly known for her brown leather aviator jacket, tall leather boots, and leather gloves.

Leather jackets have been a major symbol of the most memorable bad boys throughout the history of film. The leather jacket is always worn by the cool crowd, portraying their defiance and style.  In fact, this is how the leather jacket became so popular in the American culture.

Our next stop down memory lane, leads us to the infamous bad boy, 'Johnny Strabler' in the movie, "The Wild One."

2. Marlon Brando - The Wild One

Marlon Brando's character Johnny Strabler in The Wild One (1953) changed the status of leather jackets forever. As one of the earliest movies to portray the era of youth rebellion, Marlon Brando's character is a fond and commonly shared leather jacket memory. Brando played the leader of a motorcycle gang suited up in black leather jackets, labeled "BRMC" on the back.

3. Fonzie - Happy Days

Everyone loved the leather- jacketed character "The Fonz" in the sitcom Happy Days back in the 1970's.  The leather-clad greaser and mechanic wore his leather jacket and rode his motorcycle around Milwaukee, Wisconsin like not other.  He started out as a smaller character, but eventually got to the top. Fonzie is one of our favorite leather jacket wearing icons.

"..And Fonzie... super-cool Fonzie. Fonzie with his 'Ayyy!' I mean, that's pretty... that's really sicko when you come right down to it. "

4.  John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John - Grease

John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John started in the 1978 film Grease. The film takes place in the 1950's, Danny (John Travolta) is a bad boy leather jacket wearing greaser and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) plays an innocent australian girl. Towards the end of the movie, Sandy transforms her look from good girl, to bad girl by dressing from head to toe in skin tight black leather pants and a black leather top, with red platform heels. Sandy and Danny dance together at the carnival, and this is a moment in leather fashion to remember forever.

5. James Dean

James Dean and his signature leather jacket are an important piece in fashion leather culture. In the movie, Rebel Without a Cause, Dean played a 17 year old bad boy, Jim Stark, who's always getting into trouble with the police. Cleaning out the closet? 7 Tips for Storing Your Leather

On rainy spring weekends many of us spend time cleaning out our closets. If you own leather clothing and accessories this a great time to ensure that your leather is stored properly. With proper care our classic leather jackets and accessories can last a lifetime.
Here are a few tips to help your leather apparel survive the warm season in storage.

•Always use wide or padded hangers to maintain the shape of your leather garments.
•Keep leather out of plastic bags, storage bins or other coverings that do not breathe.
•Always allow wet or damp leather to air-dry naturally, do not apply a direct heat source.
•Do not store leather on areas that are humid or dry and avoid direct sunlight.
•Clean areas around the neckline and collar with leather cleaner before storing.
•Treat cleaned leather garments with conditioner to restore flexibility.
•Brush suede with a terry towel to freshen up the look.

Remember to store your leather in a closet with plenty of room because leather needs to breathe. A tightly packed closet can lead to a nasty surprise next season when you reach for your favorite leather jacket.
